R.W. Long is the father of two Marine Corps veterans. He lives in Colorado with his beloved wife of 30+ years and their dogs, Doc and Wyatt. He relishes his second chance to live life to the fullest: spending time with family, being Papa to his granddaughter, hiking in the mountains, training for endurance events, and seeking ways to help others find their first summit.
A native Southerner, R.W. was born in Tennessee, the first of three boys of a young stay-at-home mother and a Soldier serving in Vietnam at the time of his birth. He married the love of his life in his early 20s, and together they had two sons. Life was good as the years passed, and together they built their version of the American Dream ... until the day that everything changed.
As a result of being diagnosed with Young Onset Parkinson's disease in his mid-thirties, he spent several years learning how to live in a body that wouldn't cooperate. In 2010, inspired by a family crisis, motivated by love, and driven by his faith in God, he was able to begin forging a new life of unlimited possibilities.
Reaching the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro ten years after his Parkinson's diagnosis was the culmination of a life-changing turnaround. Push the Rock is the true story of faith, second chances, and the power of family to overcome life’s greatest challenges. R.W. Long tells his story to help others in the midst of their storm; even in the darkest of times, there's still hope.
